Camp Wood is rich in history. The site was originally an abandoned location of the Spanish mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz, founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1762. After that a small community grew around an established US Army post of the same name
in 1857. The army abandoned the post in 1861, but Texas rangers used the facilities for a number of years following the Civil War.
In March 1924, three years before his famous transatlantic flight, Charles Lindberg crashed his plane into the local hardware store in Camp Wood, Texas. While awaiting parts, he was greeted with the warm hospitality of the area Nueces Canyon folks. Luckily, you don't have to crash anything to receive that same hometown welcome.

Nestled near the edge of the subtropical Chihuahuan desert of Mexico with its thirsty terrain and rapid evaporation, Camp Wood is warm and dry in the summer and mild in the winter. As you might suspect, spring and fall are probably the best times to visit our area, but summer activities such as camping and swimming bring visitors from all around.
Camp Wood is home to 2 of 3 excellent schools that make up the Nueces Canyon Independent School District - Nueces County Elementary and NC Middle School.

Nueces County High School is located a short distance away in Barksdale and also serves the area. Higher education needs are
served by Southwest Texas Junior College from 30 miles away and the University
of Texas at San Antonio from 90 miles away.
It's just 30 miles to Uvalde Memorial Hospital, which provides health care to
the region.
Here in The Texas Hill Country, there are a variety of recreational
opportunities such as swimming, boating, hunting and nature viewing. If
motorcycle touring is your primary interest, come ride the "El Camino Loco"
Loop. (Translation: "The Crazy Roads")
Today you'll find many attractions and activities to keep you busy. Camp Wood is
just a few miles from Garner State Park and the beautiful Lost Maples State
Natural Area. There's also plenty of year-round activities for the
outdoor-minded family such as swimming, camping and hiking. The area is also
rich in fossils and Native American artifacts.
Other attractions include Lake Nueces Park, scenic drives and even Tinker, a
fossilized T. Rex. He's found a new home in Camp Wood after originally resting
for thousands of years in the Hell Creek Formation of western South Dakota. This
fascinating fossil can now be seen by all those interested in pre-history right
here.
There are even more activities and events in and around Camp Wood to suit just
about any interest. The Annual Old Settler's Reunion takes place each first
Saturday in August at the city park. In November every year there's the Hunter's
Feast and Arts and Crafts Fair which features live entertainment, adult bow
shooting, a barbecue lunch and a children's turkey shoot. During the holiday
season you'll be entertained by the Yuletide Twilight Festival and Christmas in
the Canyon.
